The Jallow Foundation, The Gambia, A Charity Set Up To Relieve Poverty, Help, Provide, Train, Educate, Provide Employment, Empower and Provide Essential Facilities and Equipment To Those In Need

The pictures below give a small insight into the daily life of people living in the provinces.

You will see from the photographs that families live in small mud block built houses with straw roofs. In the rainy season these houses can be damaged or washed away and some of the houses shown you will see, are in dire need of repair.

Transport is by cart and if you are ill that is the way you have to be taken to hospital miles away, whatever your condition, regrettably some people don't make it and families have to just turn round and bring them back for burial!

Water has to be fetched from the well, no easy job, food has to be pounded, washing done by hand.

Subsistence farming is back breaking, with preparation done by hand with the basic tools, no mechanisation here to help, only man or man and animal, if the family are lucky enough to own an animal, failing which borrow one, can help here.

To go ANYWHERE unless you have the use of a cart, you walk, however far that may be and however long it may take and whatever the weather.

EBRIMA JALLOW OUR GAMBIAN CO-ORDINATOR

Does your house have a hole in the roof?

Do you have to walk miles several times a day for ALL the water your family needs?

Do you have NO food to feed your family?

If you are ill do you get taken to the hospital on a donkey cart?

Do you have to try and afford to buy a candle to use when it is dark?

Do you HAVE TO to pay if you want your children to go to school?

Do you have to walk miles in boiling heat or in pouring rain down muddy tracks to go anywhere or to get anything you or your family may need?

Are you unable to buy clothes, food or medicine for you and your family?

How much do you throw away, uneaten food perhaps, not in The Gambia, no food is uneaten, it is too precious.

NOTHING IN THEGAMBIA IS THROWN AWAY,

THEY HAVE NOTHING TO THROW AWAY!

How much money do you spend on non essentials without even thinking?

Every Dalasi in The Gambia is precious, non-essentials are not essential when there is not enough money for food, medicine, adequate shelter, clothing, education and so much more that we, in the West, all take for granted, however badly off we may think that we are.

Most people in the provinces rely on subsistence farming, but this can only be done in the rainy season and the crops are not enough to last until the next rainy season. The little harvest that can be sold does not bring in much money and families often go hungry. The lucky ones may have one family member who has managed to find a job but that person then has the overwhelming responsbility of trying to stretch the little money earned, to care for an extended family as well as themselves.

 IMPOSSIBLE! Don't you think?

WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO COPE?

NO?!

Then please.......
